There are three basic types of lighting that work together to light up your home or business.
A good lighting plan combines all three types to light an area according to function or style.
This provides an area with overall lighting levels. Also known as ambient lighting, general lighting offers a comfortable level of illumination. This can be done with ceiling or wall mounted luminaires, recessed or track lights and with external lanterns. A basic form of lighting that replaces sunlight, general lighting is fundamental lighting design.
Task lighting helps you perform specific tasks such as reading, cooking, sewing, hobbies games, and working from home. This type of lighting can be provided by tape and track lights, pendent lighting, portable lamps or under cabinet lights.
Task lighting should be free of distracting glare and shadows and should be bright enough to prevent eye strain.
Accent lighting adds drama to a room by creating visual interest as part of a decorating scheme it can be used to spot light sculptures, house plants, paintings and other prized possessions. It can also be used to highlight the textures of a wall, landscaping or drapery. Accent lighting requires 3 times as much lighting on the focal point as the light surrounding it. This type of lighting is usually provided by track, tape, under cabinet and wall mounted luminaires including spots.
